Tom Cruise Scientology Video Leaked
Written by Staff Writer
Jan 16, 2008 at 11:55 AM
A four year old video containing Tom Cruise talking about his Scientology beliefs has been leaked onto the internet.

Cruise is shown discussing how he wants to spread the message of Scientology, saying: "You're in the playing field or out of the arena".

In the edited video, which features the Mission Impossible theme, he says a Scientologist driving past an accident is "the only one who can really help".

A Scientology spokeswoman said the full video could be seen in its churches.

What appeared on the internet was a "pirated and edited" version of an acceptance speech Cruise had made in 2004 after receiving a "freedom medal" from the International Association of Scientologists, she said.

TORONTO (Reuters) - A new law meant to help crack down on young Canadian street racers in their souped up cars has nabbed an octogenarian in his Oldsmobile. The 85-year-old man is one of 2,300 drivers across Ontario to be charged under new legislation, designed to combat "street racing, stunts and contests", since it came into effect three months ago -- and he's the oldest.

The man was pulled over after allegedly driving 161 kilometers per hour (100 mph) this week on a main highway north of Toronto, where the speed limit is 100 km/h, Ontario Provincial Police said.

"It really doesn't matter the age of the person or whether they're trying to race another car," OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley said on Friday. "The consequences of the crashes and the laws of physics are always in effect."

Under the street racing legislation, a person is charged if they are driving 50 km/h more than the posted speed limit.

Dec 24, 2007 at 10:16 AM
The incumbent president of Uzbekistan, Islam A. Karimov, won 88.1 percent of the votes in a landslide presidential election yeseterday.

The results give Mr. Karimov overwhelming support for a third term, but the contest was widely accepted as a foregone conclusion and casts doubt on the country’s long-term stability.

While the Central Election Commission said the voting met electoral standards, the election drew criticism from Western election observers. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the West’s main mechanism for monitoring elections in the former Soviet sphere, and which sent a limited observer mission to Kyrgyzstan, said that the election failed to meet many O.S.C.E. benchmarks for democratic elections, were held in a strictly controlled environment, and that there had been no real opposition. “All the candidates publicly endorsed the incumbent,” the O.S.C.E. said.
