Another incident involving security guards in Baghdad occurred today, with the US government immediately denying any connection.
Sean McCormack,State Department spokesman, said the overnight shooting of two women by foreign security guards had "nothing to do with the State department or the US government".
It is not presently known with which security firm the guards were working.
Witnesses and Iraqi security officials said guards opened fire on the two women's car in the centre of the Iraqi capital and then sped off "like gangsters".
The shooting came two days after Iraq vowed to punish the US security firm Blackwater, after a probe found its guards were not provoked when they opened "deliberate" fire in Baghdad three weeks ago, killing 17 Iraqis.
Mirembe Nantongo, a US embassy spokeswoman in Baghdad, said the overnight incident was not connected with the embassy, which is guarded by Blackwater staff.
The role of private security companies operating in Iraq has been under the scanner since September 16, when Blackwater USA guards escorting a convoy of US diplomats opened fire in Baghdad's Nisoor square. |
