Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti has died, but troubled rock star Amy Winehouse is still very much alive. Tenor Jose Carreras was cornered by members of the press keen to get his views on Amy Winehouse’s battles with drugs and booze.

“Er, I don’t really know anything about this, I wanted to speak about my friend Pavarotti, “ said the Tenor, but when pressed by journalists he admitted, “Well, I suppose if she isn’t dead then that’s a good thing.”

Placido Domingo, another member of the 3 Tenors alongside Pavarotti and Carreras, also seemed reluctant to comment on whether troubled troubadour Winehouse is getting the help she clearly needs.

“I don’t know who this person is?” was Domingo’s evasive response.

Pavarotti died at his home in Modena, northern Italy, early on Wednesday morning, while at the same time Amy Winehouse was seen drinking and talking to her husband Blake Fiedler-Civil outside a café in West London. Had Pavarotti not been dead then he would no doubt have been pleased to see that Winehouse was drinking nothing more than a coffee. Although onlookers could neither confirm or deny that the tortured enigma that is Amy Winehouse hadn’t already spiked her own drink with brandy and barbiturates.

Pavarotti’s family were also unable to confirm if, shortly before his death, the ailing tenor was disappointed that Amy Winehouse had failed to secure the Mercury Music Prize on Tuesday evening. Instead she lost to somebody else.

“We’re too upset to comment on this matter,” said relatives of the dead Italian, most probably in reference to talented but tragic Amy's ill-judged snub by the Mercury judges. Throughout his long and distinguished career Pavarotti never spent any time in rehab, but Winehouse did as recently as a few weeks ago.

Opera superstar Luciano Pavarotti was 71. An age many in the music industry would like to see Amy Winehouse reach if she would only ditch her co-dependent husband and kick the skag. While Pavarotti’s body is now lying in state in a Modena cathedral, Winehouse spent the afternoon buying a pack of cigarettes and is now thought to be at her London home, with her record company’s insisting that she is ’probably watching a DVD or sleeping’.

British star Leslie Garrett, choking back tears, added that Pavarotti liked both food and wine. However, unlike Amy, it was clear the deceased singer knew where to draw the line. Amy Winehouse’s fans are hoping that Pavarotti’s death will act as a wake up call for Winehouse. If she doesn’t mend her ways there is every possibility that she will die at some unspecified point in the future.
