Today Russian experts recovered computers responsible for steering the ISS and life support. Mission Control asked the astronauts to conserve power aboard Atlantis in case the shuttle's stay at the space station is extended by a day while the Russians fix the computer problems.
More trouble-shooting was under way. If not resolved, the difficulties with the three guidance and navigation computers could orce NASA, Russia and their partners to consider evacuating the space station. The orbital outpost has been continuously staffed by two or three U.S. astronauts and Russian cosmonauts for nearly seven years.

"I expect we will have the computers back in the next several days," said NASA's Mike Suffredini , the space station program manager. "It's not an urgent situation, but clearly we need to get this resolved."
The shuttle's seven astronauts delivered a $367 million solar power module to the station. During spacewalks Monday and Wednesday, shuttle astronauts bolted the module to the station and extended two 115-long solar panels.
Today, the shuttle's four spacewalking astronauts huddled to go over plans for repairs to the fabric heatshielding stretched across the left side of Atlantis' tail section. |
