A secret letter has today been discovered which seems to imply that the father of modern evlutionary theory, Charles Darwin, subjected the famous victorian botanist JD Hooker to repeated erotic abuse.
In the letter, written around 1850, Hooker reports that "it was an established rule that every day he [Darwin] 'pumped me', as he called it, for half an hour or so after breakfast in his study". Is this evidence that Darwin was a solid gold poofter?
According to the respected Darwin historian Dov Ospovat, "often the answers to such questions are recorded in the numerous notes on conversations that are scattered throughout Darwin's manuscripts".
Whatever the truth, it is unlikely that we will ever know for sure. "It is not clear", says Ospovat, "whether Lyell, Owen, Forbes, or several other of Darwin's contemporary naturalists were ever 'pumped' by him in the manner described by Hooker, although Huxley, Waterhouse and perhaps even Thomas V. Woolaston probably were".
