A car thief who stole a Citroen C5 estate, was shocked to look in the rear view mirror to see an elderly couple staring at him from the back seat.
The car owner had left the keys in the ignition when he jumped out of the car to go into the shop. The joyrider entered the car, apparently without realising that the drivers parents, both in their 90s, were sitting together in the back.

After realising that he wasn't alone the thief stopped the car a mile on, in the outskirts of Sunderland. Inspector Sara Pitt said 'This was an extremely distressing incident, when someone stole a car with two elderly people inside.

'We're carrying out a full investigation to try and find the person responsible and would welcome information which could help us do this.

'Fortunately, the elderly people involved were not injured in any way and the car was abandoned nearby shortly afterwards.'
